Welcome to the lab’ of Paul S. Brookes, PhD. at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Our research explores many aspects of mitochondrial function in the context of cardiac ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury, and protection of the heart by ischemic preconditioning (IPC) and cardioprotective drugs. Current projects are investigating the roles of mitochondrial potassium channels, nitro-lipids and sirtuins in cardioprotection. We use both biochemical and physiological models, ranging from the study of isolated mitochondria and protein post-translational modifications, to whole organism physiological models of IR injury. Additionally, we use high-throughput screening approaches to identify novel cardioprotective agents and examine relationships between disease pathology and metabolic function.
